Our Lady of Hope Parish was established in 2002 after an extensive amalgamation process. The word parish means a geographical territory and an administrative unit within a larger territory called a diocese. Our Lady of Hope Parish includes the former smaller parishes of St. Anthony’s, St. Clement’s and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Our Lady of Hope makes up what is called the West End of Sudbury.
The merging parishes:
St. Clement Parish
In 1936, Bishop R.H. Dignan approved the construction in the West End of Sudbury to accomodate a rapid growth of the faithful. During its 66 years, only 5 pastors, with the help of many assists, would administer in the parish. Fr. C.J Salini, the first appointed pastor, remained in that role until his death in 1967. Fr. W.G. O'Driscoll, who had been assistant pastor for 11 years, served as pastor from 1967 until his death in 1972. During his tenure he finished the exterior of the church with stone facing and installed new flooring. Fr. F. Farenzena, who had spent six years in the missions in Guatemala, served as pastor from 1972 until 1983. Fr. W. Lalonde, who grew up in St. Clement's and had been a faithful altar boy, was the "native son" pastor from 1983 to 1988. Fr. J. Caswell served as pastor from 1988 to 2002. He was part of the West-End Cluster and served the parishioners of St. Anthony, St. Clement and Our Lady of Perpetual Help parishes.
The church was closed in 2002 and merged with Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish into the newly established Our Lady of Hope Parish.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish
In 1938, the first pastor, Fr. J. McCann, purchased property on the corner of Lorne and Edna Streets for $4000. Following this, a church was erected at a cost of $8600 and named Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. The parish benefitted greatly from the energy and determination of three consecutive long serving pastors. Fr. H. Brennan, pastor from 1943 to 1975, was responsible for the construction of the present church, which was blessed by Bishop A. Carter in 1971. Under Fr. G. Sullivan, pastor from 1975 to 1987, the role of the parish council was enlarged and codified. Monsignor R. Farrell, pastor from 1987 to 2001, established the Chapel of Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
In 2002, the parish merged with St. Clement to form Our Lady of Hope Parish.
St. Anthony Parish
Fr. F. Borsa was the first pastor of the parish, which was established in 1953. As Italian immigrants settled in the Gatchel area they brought with them a devotion to St. Anthony. It seemed appropriate to name the church after this patron saint. Many social events and fundraisers were held to build the church and the basement was laid by parishioners themselves. Fr. R. Venti, pastor from 1960 to 1967, directed the building of the addition to the original basement. He started this project in late 1963 and Bishop A. Carter blessed the finished building in March 1964. Fr. E. Vallorosi arrived in 1967 and ministered to the people of the parish for the next 30 years until his retirement in 1997. During his tenure, the church building was renovated and the interior beautified.
On January 1, 2011, St. Anthony's Church became part of Our Lady of Hope Parish as a Worship Site.
